Meet Greg
I am Greg Merritt, PhD, a specialized consultant and patient partner dedicated to placing lived experience at the helm of research governance. As a voting member of the PCORnet Steering Committee and Patient Co-Investigator for the PaTH Clinical Research Network, I foster systemic collaboration within executive groups and advisory councils. I penned the 2026 Medical Care commentary “Patient Voices Leading Change” to promote more humanized, connected scientific leadership. In late 2025, I joined PCORI’s Executive Director for a keynote dialogue at their Annual Meeting. My perspective is rooted in my journey as a cardiac arrest survivor and a career in community leadership. As a “questionologist,” I guide research teams toward meaningful inquiries by elevating the voices of patient leaders who shape the future of medicine.
Leading Networks
Following my survival of a cardiac episode in 2012, I committed to transforming research culture by integrating patient partners into the highest levels of decision-making. I cultivate professional networks where patient leaders thrive on steering committees and executive boards. My focus is ensuring these partners serve as true co-architects of research, determining agendas and influencing how evidence is applied.
Agile Design
High-level governance requires flexibility. I design collaborative structures and meeting rhythms that accommodate the expertise of patient leaders, ensuring their advisory roles remain impactful and sustainable throughout the long-term lifecycle of a clinical network or project.
Humanity
Serving in research leadership should be empowering, not exhausting. I provide the mentorship and emotional support necessary to ensure that every patient partner on a council or committee feels valued, respected, and fully integrated as a high-level collaborator.
Fair Pay
True partnership demands equitable compensation. I advocate for professional stipends that honor the specialized expertise patient partners bring to governance roles, ensuring their leadership contributions are recognized with the same value as any other professional.
